Dashboards - Weighted Calculations

Our dashboards now have the option to apply a weighting factor to your data. For instance, to create an even comparison over different target groups or product groups. You can activate weighting in the dashboard settings by following the steps below.

Weighting factor in the data

For each record in the project in which you want to apply a weighting factor, that factor needs to be available in the data of that project.

This means that an additional data column (that holds the weighting factor) needs to be either created or needs to be already available in the data.

If you need to create an additional column you can start reading from here, else jump to step 4.

1. Creating an additional data column

Read this article to create an additional column where the weighting factor will be added.

Choose a header name that helps you identify this column later. The recommended data type is float.

2. Adding the weighting factor

We recommend using a reference table import source and a reverse VLOOKUP rule to add the weighting factor to any existing data.

This option can also be used when you want to correct the weighting factor.

How to create an import source

Using a VLookup dynamic rule

Using a Reversed Vlookup dynamic rule

Once all your existing data has the weighting factor added, your can disable the VLOOKUP rule. Don’t delete it, you may need it in the future.

3. Adding the weighting factor to new records.

You can use the same reference table import source to add the weighting factor to new records that are imported into your database by using the Vlookup within a creation rule.

4. Apply weighting on the dashboard

Once the weighting factor column and the actual factor is available in the database, you can now get to your dashboard settings and click the checkbox "Weighing results with weight variable".

Now select the project and the column that contain the weighting factor.

Save your settings and your calculations are automatically weighted.

Keep mind that:

  • weighing is only applied to calculated values such as an average, count, SUM, NPS, CES, CSAT etc. The number of responses (the N value) is not weighted but will continue to reflect the actual number of records that are available in your project.
  • weighing is applied to all widgets in your dashboard that use a calculation.
  • weighing is only applied to records that have an available value for the weighing factor.

Tip: if you want an easy compare between the weighted results and unweighted results, make a copy of your dashboard before step 4 and rename it (Unweighted <dashboard name> for example). Then apply the weighting only to the original dashboard. This way you can easily switch between the two dashboards without having to change the dashboard settings.
